| Klezmer Program -
Since 2001 Kenny Green has been the
musical director of a unique program of klezmer music for
kids. Composed of multiple instrumental bands, the
Westchester Klezmer Program is a hands-on experience for
budding and/or accomplished performers of various age
groups. Kids from pre-teens to teens with the occasional
adult get to perform classic and modern klezmer pieces under
Kenny's expert and inspiring direction. And you don't have
to be just a clarinet or violin player to join - any
instrument is OK.
What makes this program unique is that
Kenny is guiding young musicians in tackling what is
generally considered a rather challenging form of music
complete with complex ornaments and unusual scales. The
results are astounding and prove that with visionary
direction rules can be rewritten.
Initially supported by the UJA
federation, the Westchester Klezmer Program is now self
supporting and may very well be the largest program of it's
kind in the world. Bands take part in various performance
opportunities which include, but are not limited to
performances at local synagogues. All who get involved with
this program get to have a unique cultural experience that
is highly educational and by any analysis utterly special.
